What is cellulite?
Cellulite affects more than 80% of women at some point in their lives and the length of time that they have it can vary.
So, what is cellulite?
Cellulite is a collection of fatty deposits, waste materials and excess fluids imprisoned in the interstitial tissues of the body. It is an extremely tough, hardened fat that is the product of our Western lifestyle, such as poor diet and lack of exercise and accumulates just beneath the surface of the skin.
What causes the skin dimpling?
Due to any number of factors in the body, the fat cells beneath the skin begin to grow without the area of fat itself getting any bigger. All this growth has to go somewhere and the most flexible part of the body is the skin. As these fat cells grow and push against the surface, dimpling begins to appear.
Why does cellulite most commonly appear on the hips, thighs and bum?
It most commonly appears in these regions because they are extremely fibrous tissue areas of the body, that naturally have a high level of fat retention combined with lower circulation, meaning they are not easily carried away by the bloodstream or lymphatic system.
Cellulite can also gather on the stomach, upper arms and knees.
Why do women get cellulite more than men?
Women are more affected by cellulite than men due to the fact that they have a thicker layer of subcutaneous fat (beneath the skin), particularly in the areas most prone to it, and thinner skin which makes the dimpled texture more pronounced. The other factor is female hormones, in particular progesterone, which can cause additional water retention around the “fatty” tissue. Oestrogen also encourages the filling up of the cellulite prone tissues.
